One of my favorite ways to make Paris more affordable with kids is to take advantage of the city’s generous museum admission policies.
At several major Paris museums, visitors under 18 can enter the museum for free—although the exact rules, ticket requirements and age limits vary by museum.
That can make a surprisingly big difference to a family travel budget, especially when you’re visiting expensive attractions throughout Paris.

The Musée Rodin is another excellent option if your teen isn’t excited about spending an entire day looking at paintings.

I would definitely add the Petit Palais museum to a family itinerary.
Unlike the other museums on this list, you don’t have to be under 18 to visit the permanent collection for free. Admission to the Petit Palais permanent collections is free for all visitors.
That makes it an especially useful stop for families traveling together because you don’t have to pay admission for the adults, either.
The museum sits near the Champs-Élysées and Grand Palais, making it easy to incorporate into a sightseeing day.
Why visit Petit Palais with teens?
The building itself is beautiful, and the museum’s collection includes paintings, sculptures and decorative arts.
It’s also a good choice when you want to experience a Paris museum without committing to one of the city’s massive institutions.
And because the permanent collection is free, there’s very little downside to popping in for a shorter visit.
Important: Petit Palais has separate admission policies for temporary exhibitions. Visitors under 17 can receive free admission to those paid exhibitions, while ages 18–26 receive reduced admission. Check the museum’s current rules before visiting.

Use Petit Palais as a flexible stop rather than building your entire day around it. You can visit the collection, see the beautiful interior, and then continue exploring the Champs-Élysées or nearby Paris sights.

For example, an adult non-EEA ticket at the Louvre is currently €32, while admission is free for visitors under 18. Musée d’Orsay currently charges €16 online for general admission while visitors under 18 enter free.
If you’re traveling with one or two teenagers, those savings can add up over several museum visits.
And that’s money I’d much rather spend on the things my teens actually get excited about:
- French pastries
- Crêpes
- A Seine River cruise
- Shopping
- Fun attractions
- A great dinner
The key is to use the free museums strategically rather than trying to visit every museum simply because admission is free.
How to Make Museum Days Easier With Teens
A few things have made museum days much more enjoyable for our family.
1. Don’t schedule museums back-to-back
Paris has plenty to see outside museums. Mix cultural stops with food, shopping, parks and neighborhoods.
2. Give your teen some control
Let them choose a few things they want to see.
Even better, give them the job of finding one artwork or exhibit they think everyone else should see.
3. Keep some visits short
You don’t have to spend half a day in every museum.
A focused visit can be enough.
4. Check the current admission rules before you go
“Free for under 18” doesn’t necessarily mean “walk in without a ticket.”
The Louvre, for example, recommends reserving a timed ticket even for visitors receiving free admission.
Bring proof of age, too.
5. Build your itinerary around neighborhoods
One of the easiest ways to make Paris sightseeing less exhausting is to group attractions geographically.
That’s one reason I recommend thinking carefully about where you stay.
