Little Island

Why Little Island Was One of Our Favorite Stops in NYC with Teens

When people plan a trip to New York City, they usually think about Times Square, Central Park, or the Statue of Liberty. But you might also want to consider making time to visit Little Island NYC with teens for a unique experience.

Little Island wasn’t originally on our must-see list, but our friend who lives in Brooklyn suggested it.

In fact, we almost skipped it.

I’m so glad we didn’t.

It ended up being one of our favorite stops during our mother-daughter trip to New York City—a peaceful break from the crowds with beautiful gardens, river views, and plenty of places to slow down for a while. We visited Little Island on Day 2 of our 3-Day NYC Itinerary.

If you’re planning New York City with teens, I’d absolutely make time for it.

What Is Little Island?

Little Island is a public park built on concrete “tulips” rising above the Hudson River.

Instead of feeling like another attraction, it feels like a quiet escape.

You’ll find:

🌳 Walking paths

🌸 Gardens

💧 River views

🪑 Places to sit

🎤 Seasonal performances

Because admission is free, Little Island one of my favorite places to recommend to families with teens visiting NYC on a budget.

Why We Loved Little Island with Teens

Sometimes the best travel memories happen when you’re not rushing from attraction to attraction.

That was exactly what Little Island gave us.

After exploring Chelsea Market, we wandered over to the park with no real plan.

We walked the winding paths, climbed to the viewpoints, and simply enjoyed slowing down for a little while.

It reminded me that teenagers don’t always need constant entertainment.

Sometimes they just need space to wander.

What Teens Enjoy About Little Island

My daughter especially liked:

🌿 The unique design

📸 Plenty of photo spots

🌊 River views

🚶 Walking the trails

It wasn’t flashy.

Or crowded.

It was simply a beautiful place to explore together.

Pair It With Chelsea Market

One reason I recommend Little Island is because it’s so easy to combine with other nearby attractions.

Our perfect afternoon looked like this:

🥯 Lunch at Chelsea Market

🌿 Walk through Little Island

🛍️ Shopping in SoHo

🎭 Wicked that evening

It ended up being one of our favorite days of the trip.

Is Little Island Worth Visiting with Teens?

Absolutely.

If you’re expecting a theme park attraction, you’ll probably be disappointed.

If you’re looking for somewhere beautiful to slow down between sightseeing stops, it’s perfect.

Looking back, it became one of the places we talked about most after we got home.

How We Made This Trip More Affordable

One question I get all the time is how we afford to travel during school breaks.

We don’t use points for everything. Instead, we use travel rewards to cover the biggest expenses—usually flights or hotels—so we have more room in our budget for experiences.

For this trip we:

✈️ Used the Southwest Companion Pass for flights

🏨 Stayed at Hotel 50 Bowery using Hyatt points transferred from our Chase Sapphire card

💳 Enjoyed airport lounge access with our Capital One Venture X card

Covering those larger expenses meant we could spend our money on Broadway, great food, shopping, and discovering places like Little Island.

The Credit Cards We Personally Use

Several readers have asked which travel credit cards we actually use, so I’ve listed the ones that have worked well for our family. As always, make sure any card is a good fit for your own financial situation, and we always pay our balances in full each month.

  • Chase Sapphire – We use it to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which we’ve transferred to Hyatt for hotels in New York City, Paris, and Costa Rica.
  • Capital One Venture X – We love it for airport lounge access, travel credits, and miles we’ve used for trips like our Eurostar journey from London to Paris.
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Card – This helped us earn the Southwest Companion Pass, saving us hundreds of dollars on flights.

👉 I’ve included my referral links above if you’re interested.

Before You Book NYC

🏨 Hotels

Hotel prices in New York can vary a lot depending on the season. We always compare cash prices before deciding whether to use points.
